Today’s sexy thong probably has its historical beginnings in the loincloths of ancient times.

While the thong of today has become a staple in women’s lingerie, the loincloth was originally a men’s garment. The first culture to have most likely worn a thong like loincloth was the Egyptians. When these garments are now produced from all types of fabrics, their ancient counterparts were most likely leather. We have historical evidence of the Egyptians use of loincloths from the more than a hundred loincloths found in the famous tomb of King Tutankhamun.

We see evidence of loincloths in the cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Japan as well. The Japanese tradition of having Sumo wrestlers wear a loincloth continues to this very day.

A “braies,” which is a large, loose fitting garment, replaced the loincloth during the middle ages. This garment was much larger than a loincloth and usually made from linen. The front of a braies often had a covering that could be either tied closed or buttoned.

We see the thongs first appearance in our modern times in 1939. The thong was worn by exotic dancers in response to the call from New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia for more appropriate dress for those in that profession.

The first modern thong is thought to have been created back in 1974 by fashion designer Rudi Gernreich. Thongs were often seen during festivals, as they were worn for years by exotic Brazilian dancers. The thong evolved into popular swimwear and these tiny thongs could commonly be seen along the beaches of South America during the 1980s. By the late 1990s the thongs popularity and influence had migrated around the world.

The sexy thong became popular in the Untied States in the 1990s as part of a movement that brought sexy lingerie into the mainstream. These days one of the best selling undergarments worldwide is the thong. The lingerie industry is estimated to be a $2 billion dollar a year business.

The thongs popularity can be seen in the popular songs that have been written about it. “The Thong Song” by Sisqo under the Def Soul label is undoubtedly the most popular of all these songs. This song was so popular that it reached number 3 on the United States popular music charts, and propelled Sisqo's debut album “Unleash The Dragon” to sales of more than 4 million copies around the world.

Of course the thong is not the only exotic lingerie that is available these days. Some other popular lingerie items include the teddy, G-string, corset, camisole, boy shorts, chemise, and bustier.

The thongs of today are a far cry from the loincloths of years past, with modern designers adding may exotic and creative details. The thong of today is chic, erotic, and minimalist. One of the many benefits of wearing a thong that appeals to women is the absence of a panty line when wearing pants. These garments are very functional as well as being very sexy!
