Interesting Historical Facts About the Chastity
Belt
While many of us have heard legends of chastity belts in use during
medieval times, the truth is that there is very little historical and
archaeological evidence of their use in that culture.
Many of the historical remnants of chastity belts
have actually been determined to be hoaxes. The legend of the chastity belt,
however, does give us a certain knowledge about their symbolic nature.
The bulk of the archaeological evidence shows that the chastity belts that were
constructed were largely used for women. There is quite a bit of debate about
whether they were forced on women by jealous husbands or used to keep women safe
from rape while their husbands were away. The truth is that they were probably
used for both purposes.
We get the most wonderful legend of the chastity belt from the twelfth century
poet Guigemar de Marie de France. Her poem tells of two young lovers who perform
a ritual to show their common oath of fidelity. The man tied a belt around the
woman’s waist, while she tied a knot around his shirt. They both swore that
their love could only be given to the person that could remove the garment
without cutting or tearing it.
